Since the week is nearly over, I will not be posting our weekly events; however I will give a recap of this week. BTW (by the way) congrats to us for the HPL All-Star Team Award nomination! I'm sure with a little more teamwork we can take the title next time!
At the start of the week (Monday & Tuesday) we had a Melcher Wii Bowling Tournament. While we intially had 32 people sign up, we had 16 show up and another 4 join the game for a total of 20 mixed-aged participants. Highlights of the game included a face-off between a young boy and one of our regular young adult patrons. The kid won, fair and square. (Mike had a great idea for a champion belt, we will be looking into the possibility of incorporating that into the mix of our tournaments...)
We also had programming for computer classes in a different format than usual. The computer class will be kept small, and student will be signing a contract to ensure their attendance on Mondays at 5.30. Each student will also have a small tutoring session of 30 minutes during the week.
Storytime was as lively as always with the silly dance contest. This week's stories even had adult patrons on the computer talking about how they "love storytime". Good job Carolyn!
School has started and as such we haven't had our volunteers coming in as often, but they have done a great job and may still be coming around to assist when they can. They really helped us out this summer, please remember to thank them as they perform a job with only our praise as reward...
IT replaced computer #2! Yay!
Heidi Daniel @ Central Programming will be arranging the arrival of some Nintendo DSI units in the near future. These hand-held gaming units will be checked out utilizing Millennium and staff will be trained on them when they arrive by Sandy Farmer. We are also working on obtaining some incentives for the tournaments we hope to have in the coming months. More info on that later...
HCC - Southeast hosted a community gathering to get ideas for their gallery opening. I was present along with other community reps and provided feedback regarding services the library and college could partner with each other on as far as the gallery was concerned. There was also talk about possibly allowing the library to use some of the HCC facilities for programming, but again...more on that as it materializes.
Daisy & Carolyn attended a Joint Youth Services meeting Thursday morning where we were reminded of a few things coming our way. Aside from the DSI hand-held gaming consoles, we will be recieving a FLIP/ CLICK kiosk that will be installed in the children's area. Wendy Hager will be calling branches and giving us advance notice of the units arrival. The unit will display various kits that contain items pertinent to increasing literacy skills and abilities in families. When items are checked in, they are to be returned to CMH (Children's Museum of Houston) to be refurbished before being checked out again. If items are checked in without the book, patrons are to be billed for the book as usual. Should other items be missing such as dolls, calculators, crayons, etc please address missing items with patrons.
I can't think of much else to address at the moment...oh yes...
- Eva will be attending the Pecan Park Civic Association meeting at 7PM on Monday of next week. Thank you Eva for representing Melcher at this meeting. Don't forget to fill us in Tuesday morning.
- Next Friday I will also be out all day with a manager's meeting in the morning and training in the afternoon.
- I will also be doing a Public Service Announcement later in the month, but I will keep you all informed with more details as they arise. So far we have a target date for August 16.
- We will also be having a staff meeting on August 18. I sent invitations to everyone via email yesterday, don't forget to rsvp!
